VUKUHAMBE AT A GLANCE
Vukuhambe Disabled Centre is a Section 1 Company, registered under the Companies Act 18 (a) as a welfare NGO which serves the interests of the physically challenged persons in Gugulethu and its broader surrounding areas in the Cape Flats.
Vukuhambe (which is translated in Xhosa as – “Rise Up and Move”) was founded in 1987 by a group of physically challenged pioneers who were inspired by a similar organization called Soweto Self Help for Paraplegics (SHAP) in Soweto, Gauteng.

To contribute towards the realization of sustainable economic growth, economic empowerment and improved self-reliance of people with challenges through capacity building and skills development approach. We achieve these endeavours by promoting entrepreneurship drive through building competitive enterprises with the centre focus of people with occupational challenges and their emancipation.
GOALS
A barrier free environment to achieve a fulfilled living
To facilitate, support, promote and sustain projects run by physically challenged persons.
To encourage socio-economic/ organizational partnerships with interest groups, state departments, companies or individuals that would benefit our focus group directly.
OUR FOCUS
This is who we want to impact
Our major focus group is comprised of unemployed youth which forms 80% of our clients/workers, the semi-skilled and unskilled adults up to the maximum of age 45. This group may be characterized with low levels of educational background which is insufficient and presents itself as an obstacle to them to tap the job market. To close the gap Vukuhambe has developed a turnaround strategy to open up opportunities and skill development interventions to create champions in their own rights.
"I joined Vukuhambe many years ago as one of their beneficiaries and doing recycling, cooking, cleaning and more. Today I have my own responsibilities and also been nominated to be a Supervisor for various departments."
