Reflecting on the S-Direct: Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, March 8, 2018
On the 8th of March 2018 S-Direct presented a technical workshop on Artificial intelligence, Machine Learning and Neural Networks. The S-DIRECT seminar is an initiative of the International Joint Research Group (IJRG) combining the expertise of imec-Smit (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), University of Gent, University of the Western Cape (UWC) and its extended partnership.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most disrupting technologies of our times. In combination with the Internet of Things it is fueling the fourth industrial revolution. Some people even call it "the new electricity". What is means is that AI will have a huge impact on our businesses, society, and politics and will undoubtedly transform the way we live and work. During this interactive and practical workshop attendees earned how to use Machine Learning to tackle real-world challenges.
The workshop was presented by Wouter Gevaert, a senior lecturer at Howest University College West Flanders –Belgium, part of the University of Gent Association. He graduated as electrical engineer and is currently teaching at Howest, University College West Flanders in New Media & Communication Technology (NMCT) and Energy management (ENM).
The seminar was well attended by university students (especially from UWC’s Post-Graduate Diploma in Data Analytics), as well as industry. The feedback was that this workshop, and especially its highly applied nature and professional presentation were very relevant.
